  4. Ephraim family papers

    Contains correspondences and Red Cross messages between Elsie Ephraim, Hildegard Ephraim (mother), and Elizabeth Ephraim (sister) from June 1941-December 1942. Elsie orignally was a nurse in Berlin, Germany, but found refuge in England and worked for a hospital in London during the war. Hildegard and Elizabeth were deported to Theresienstadt where they both perished.

    Contains mimeograph copies of trial transcripts, mimeograph copies of evidence documents, memoranda, notes (typescripts and handwritten) and some correspondence relating to Judge William C. Christianson's involvement in the Wilhelmstrasse and Frick cases at Nuremberg. Also includes general notes on the cases; resumes of the prosecution cases; memoranda from defense lawyers; notes on legal precedents and source; statements by defense witnesses; notes on history of slave labor; and documents submitted as evidence in the trials. The records date generally from 1946 to 1948.

    Contains case files on non-Spaniards (mainly German and Italian refugees) arrested and imprisoned for attempting illegal border crossings into Spain.

  8. Peter Piper letter

    The Peter Piper letter contains a handwritten letter, dated April 8, 1945, written by Peter Piper, a member of the Fourth Armored Division of the United States Army, and sent to Mary Alice Boyd in Madison, Wisconsin. In the letter, Piper describes capturing a liquor storehouse and distributing the contents to his friends, and the concentration camp he toured [likely Ohrdruf] and commented on the suicide of the mayor of the nearby village.

    Contains an unpublished manuscript, 145 pages, written circa 1973, with information about the "University in Exile," founded at the New School for Social Research in New York City in the Summer of 1933 as a protest against the expulsion of Jewish scholars from German universities.
