    Op het functioneren van de gemeente als zodanig en het vervullen van haar taken is de Tweede Wereldoorlog van grote invloed geweest. Niet alleen werden de omstandigheden door deze oorlog aanzienlijk moeilijker, tevens bracht de bezetter een wijziging in de voor ons land normale opbouw van het bestuur van een gemeente. De gemeenteraad werd buitenspel gezet door het verbod om na 31 augustus 1941 nog als zodanig bijeen te komen.     De zaak Menten kreeg halverwege de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw veel media-aandacht in Nederland. In 1976 werd er door de toenmalige Minister van Justitie Van Agt een onderzoekcommissie aangesteld die het verleden van P.N. Menten moest onderzoeken. In het archief van deze onderzoekscommissie zijn alle stukken bewaard gebleven waar zij gebruik van heeft gemaakt. Het betreft eigen correspondentie en die met het ministerie van Justitie, getuigenverklaringen en het eindrapport van de commissie.     Dit volumineuze bestand valt uiteen in twee grote reeksen, die meerdere duizenden individuele dossiers bevatten.
