Geographical and Cultural Context

The municipality archive is the historical information center of Venray and surroundings. The work area includes the municipality of Venray and former municipality of Meerlo-Wanssum (dissolved 2010). The municipality archive manages approximately 1 kilometer of paper archive files, an images collection, an audiovisual collection and a historical library. Consulting these cultural-historical sources in the reading room of the archive is free of charge. The municipal archives work closely with RooyNet, Venray's heritage portal.

Opening Times

The reading room is open Tuesday: 09.00-12.30 and 13.00-16.30; Wednesday: on appointment; Thursday: 09.00-12.30 and 13.00-16.30

In de loop van 1942 werd de druk van de Duitse bezetting steeds meer voelbaar. Het gemeentebestuur werd praktisch ontmanteld. Op last van de Rijkscommissaris gingen de bevoegdheden van het college van B&W en de gemeenteraad over vanaf september 1941 over op de burgemeester, A.H.M. Janssen. In april-mei 1943 vonden in heel Nederland en ook in Venray stakingen plaats tegen de terugvoering van Nederlandse militairen in Duitse krijgsgevangenschap. Op 10 mei 1940 viel het Duitse leger Nederland binnen. Bij Gennep lukte het de Duitsers de spoorwegbrug ongeschonden in handen te krijgen waardoor men voorbij de Peel-Raamstelling kon komen. Na de overgave van Nederland (14 mei) werd in Venray een aantal Duitse militairen gestationeerd. Het burgerlijk bestuur bleef voorlopig ongemoeid. Aan het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog vonden hevige gevechten in en rondom Venray plaats en werden grote verwoestingen aangericht.
