  1. Ted Deutsch postcard

    The postcard was written by an officially-appointed letter writer, as dictated by Ted Deutsch and his brother when they were interned in Birkenau concentration camp. The postcard was addressed to their grandfather in Budapest, Hungary. The coded message let him know that his grandsons were alive, but that they had been separated from their parents. The messag reads, "Dear Grandfather, We are healthy and we will be working. Please, we would like to have the address of Hedi and Armin to write. Many kisses."

    This collection consists of two distinct though related groups of copy papers. The first documents, in part, the relatively short but eventful life of the German Jewess, Olga Benario, a short biographical sketch of whom follows. Also contained are copy papers which document the Benario family history. The order in which the latter arrived remains unchanged. Also included are some copy papers, which document the fate of Rudolph Benario, a family member, who was imprisoned on account of his activities as a member of the Communist Party.

    Container lid with the birth, death, and cremation dates for 28 year old Anton Oleszak. The lid is believed to be from a cremation urn used to return his ashes to his family following his execution in Dachau concentration camp. Oleszak was condemned to death by hanging in Dachau on February 17, 1942. He was a Catholic from Neustadt, Poland. It was a policy of the Nazi government to return the remains of political prisoners to their families.

    Consists of one typed memoir entitled "Zug Bist Ahtzen" ["Say You're Eighteen"] as told by Auschwitz survivor Gary S. Rubinstein to his grandson, Benyamin Moalem. In the memoir, Mr. Rubinstein describes the German invasion of his hometown of Wołomin, Poland. He describes being placed in a ghetto and his attempted escape to Łomża, Poland, in the fall of 1942.
