  2. Selig Pomerantz letter

    Antisemitic letter received in 1926 by Selig Pomerantz, the donor's grandfather, while living in Detroit, MI. The letter, sent by a tenant of Mr. Pomerantz, includes disparaging remarks about Jewish families in the neighborhood. Selig Pomerantz, born 1887 in Poland, was himself a Jewish immigrant from Eastern Europe who had come to the United States in the early twentieth century. Selig settled with his wife Ida and their three children in Detroit, where he was the proprietor of a hardware store.

    The collection primarily consists of letters written by Jewish American soldier Jack Cherniss to his wife Shirley while he was serving in the United States Army during World War II. His frequent letters describe his training in the United States and his deployment overseas in December 1944. Significant letters include one from 11 January 1945 describing an altercation with an antisemitic fellow soldier, and his letter from 27 April 1945 contains his account of the Buchenwald concentration camp shortly after liberation.   11. Wooden chest

    Hand-decorated family chest (adorned with Stars of David) which commemorates the Hirsch family's service to Hungary during World War I. Local shop owner Bela Hirsch was deported from Rascruci (Keresztut), Romania in 1944 to Auschwitz, where he was murdered. Before his deportation, he gave the chest to a non-Jewish neighbor for safekeeping. Donated by local resident Zoltan Kallos (who gave an oral history interview to the USHMM in 2017 in which he describes Bela and the Hirsch family).
