The primary mission of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society is to help Jews whose lives and freedom are endangered. Since 1880, HIAS has been the worldwide arm of the American Jewish community for rescue, relocation, family reunification, and resettlement of refugees and other migrants.

Personal letters, petitions, and newspapers published by the deportees. Records contain accounts of the aid activities of the AJJDC in the British detainee camps, including correspondence with the British authorities, medical care, educational programs, welfare activity, immigration to Mandatory Palestine and Israel, and eyewitness accounts of conditions in the camps written by the AJJDC administration. It also consists of many documents related to activities of the British soldiers.

Records related to the activities of the Zagreb Office of the HICEM Committee in Yugoslavia. The Zagreb office of HICEM gained importance after the Anschluss in 1938, when Austrian and German Jews tried to flee Europe, joined in smaller numbers by Czech, Polish, and Hungarian Jews. HICEM Zagreb registered and sheltered the refugees during their temporary stay in Yugoslavia, and took care of their everyday needs. This microfilm collection of correspondence between the Far Eastern Jewish Central Information Bureau (DALJEWCIB) and individuals and other Jewish organisations offers a valuable insight into the experiences of German and Austrian Jewish émigrés in the Far East. The personal accounts contain descriptions of the outward-bound voyage and of the climate and conditions in the host country, along with details on obtaining work and accommodation. Note that many of the letters are copies or extracts from originals. Some newsletters and newspapers are also included.

The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society passenger cards of the S.S. [sic; actually M.S.] St. Louis were prepared to coordinate fundraising in support of individuals and families once the ship returned to Europe after an unsuccessful attempt to land in Cuba in 1939. The cards contain passenger information including names, locations, occupations, and status of immigration applications to the United States, if any. The cards also document the names of relatives in the United States and elsewhere, as well as money on deposit with the National Refugee Service on behalf of individual refugees.

HICEM is established in 1927, with the goal to help European Jews emigrate. HICEM was formed with the merger of three Jewish migration associations: Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, which was based in New York; Jewish Colonization Association, which was based in Paris but registered as a British charitable society; and Emigdirect, a migration organization based in Berlin.
