The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1991 by Eve Mannes.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of a drawing created by Ludwig Goldschmidt (donor's uncle and brother of Elise Schapira), January 1939, Germany. The drawing is an image of the synagogue of Brückenau in the lower Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. Ludwig Goldschmidt was sixteen at the time. He was later deported to Dachau where he died. The collection also includes the Elise Schapira papers, which consists of correspondence to Elise in New York from her parents in Frankfurt, photographs of her parents and brother before the Holocaust and of her family in the United States, and two versions of her brief testimony recounting her family life in Germany, her escape to England, her immigration to the United States, and the loss of her brother and parents in the Holocaust.
