Holdings open for research purposes: • Historical Army Department, Bucharest • Center for Studying and Keeping Historical Military Archives, Piteşti;

Video archives • Events: historical and military important times; • Recordings that present various military activities; • Preparatory activities: drills, combat and politics preparations, festivities, taking military oath, presenting decorations, and military education.

The Bucharest office coordinates the activity of the military archives and serves as a space for limited research. It holds selections of documents on microfilm or in digital format, particularly referring to the period after August 23, 1944, when Romania left the alliance with Nazi Germany. In the reading room of the Bucharest office, researchers can also examine personal files of officers and any other files they order in advance from the Pitești repository. The main archive repository of the Romanian Military National Archives is located in Pitești. This is where the research usually takes place, researchers having access to hard copies of inventories and documents. Between the time of submitting the request and the actual access to the files, a period of several weeks may pass, necessary for verifying the files from the perspective of the national security law. Researchers have access only to declassified files. Files issued by entities other than the Ministry of National Defense or the Romanian Army must be declassified in cooperation with the issuing institution. The Romanian National Military Archives are the main source of information on the activity of the military units which were deployed on the Eastern Front and were involved in the Holocaust. The most important collections of documents were issued by the General Staff of the Army and its Sections: The 1st Section Mobilization - Organization, responsible for the forced labor of Jews; The Second Section, which treated „the Jewish question” as a counterintelligence matter and coordinated the antisemitic policies; The Third Section - Operations, where operative orders issued by Ion Antonescu and his generals can be found; The Propaganda Section, one of the sources of official antisemitism etc. Another relevant source are the collections of documents issued by the large units of the Romanian Army: The 3rd and the 4th Army and all the divisions and regiments which fought as part of them or were temporarily commanded by Wehrmacht. For details on the antisemitic policies, one can research collections related to the Governorates of Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transnistria, The Military Commandment of Odesa, The Direction of Military Justice etc.
