History

The University of Crete Library consists of the Central Library in Rethymnon University Campus, which supports Humanities, Social Sciences and Education, and the Library of Heraklionin Heraklion University Campus, which supports the School of Science and Engineering and the School of Medicine.

Records Management and Collecting Policies

Old books, engravings and other printed or non printed material of particular historic, artistic or scholarly value and importance that has been either purchased or donated is kept for security reasons in the Closed access collections of the University of Crete Library of Rethymnon. The Library’s policy as regards the book collections, which have been purchased or donated, is to keep them undivided to reflect the range of interests of their creators, and their intellectual adventure. The department of the Close access collections is responsible for: Administrating and protecting the material of the Close access collections, Administrating and protecting the archival material, Serving the users as regards the material of the Close access collections, Creating electronic records for the rare book material, Organizing exhibitions and other activities for the promotion of the rare and the other library treasures, Publishing and circulating promotional and information leaflets relevant to the library’s holdings, Collecting important documents and other historical objects.

Finding Aids, Guides, and Publication

The University’s library intends to have the rare books collection fully digitized. Until now the library’s personnel is promptly guiding the researcher through registration and inventory books. The material can be used only inside the library’s special sector. Some of the material is in microfilm or in digital form. The reader can ask for up to five items.

Central Library in Rethymno - provides services as follows: Monday - Friday 09:00 - 19:00 Borrowing of Open Collection's material. 09:00 - 19:00 In-house borrowing of restricted loaning material. 19:00 - 19:45 Overnight borrowing of restricted loaning material. 09:00 - 19:00 Usage of photocopy machines. Saturday 09:00 - 14:00 Borrowing of Open Collection's material. 09:00 - 14:00 In-house borrowing of restricted loaning material. 14:00 - 14:45 Overnight borrowing of restricted loaning material. 09:00 - 14:00 Usage of photocopy machines.

Reproduction Services

Article 10. Material reproduction 10.1 All LIS branch are equipped with photocopying and printing equipment to cover usersΆ and visitors' needs. 10.2 Photocopiers and printers available to users and visitors operate only with magnetic cards. 10.3 LIS does not provide free magnetic cards to any library user. Photocopying costs are fixed with decision of the Library Head Director, which is revised when appropriate. These costs are the same for all LIS branches. Library income occurring from photocopies, is used to cover urgent operational needs under decision of the Head Library Director, who informs the Library Committee (article 10 ) 10.4 Users photocopy for themselves. During rush hours, users must obey the designated staffΆs instructions. Priority is given to users who want to photocopy material of reserve collections. 10.5 Copying of any material is subject to international intellectual property legislation.
