History
The Bavarian Main State Archives were founded on 16 July 1921, with the combination of three central archives, Allgemeinen Reichsarchiv, Geheimen Staatsarchiv, Geheimen Hausarchiv. These formed part of the Bavarian Main State Archives and after their reorganization in 1978, they were organized into individual departments within the Archives.
Archival and Other Holdings
The holdings of the Bavarian Main State Archives are divided into six main collections: Z (Zentrale Angelegenheiten), I (Ältere Bestände), II (Neuere Bestände), III (Geheimes Hausarchiv), IV (Kriegsarchiv) und V (Nachlässe und Sammlungen). Among others contains restitution- and/or compensation-related materials: 1. Bayerisches Staatsministerium der Finanzen; 2. Staatskommissariat zur Betreuung der rassisch, religiös und politisch Verfolgten; 3. Bayerisches Landesentschädigungsamt, 4. Bayerischer Verwaltungsgerichtshof; 1. Use of the Archives is regulated by the Benützungsordnung (GVBl S. 6), details available online: http://www.gda.bayern.de/archive/hauptstaatsarchiv/5. No payment is required for familial or research-based use of the Archives. 40 places are available in the reading rooms within the main building on Schönfeldstraße
