Archival and Other Holdings

The Ostrava City archives hold 6014 linear meters of archival material from 1362 to 2013. The material is devided into 1481 archival fonds and collections. 734 are processed and open to the public.

The archives contain documents of the institutions and national authorities, who worked at the city and county of Ostrava, or in villages that are now part of the city (municipal authorities, national committees, district office), justice authorities (district court, city prosecutor's office) documents of schools and healthcare facilities operating in the city, associations, church administration (parish offices of individual municipalities), personal collections of prominent personalities of the region and others.

An important place among the archival documents have collections for example: A collection of maps and plans, photographs and postcards, posters and official prints, a collection of writings, of demolished buildings and many others.

From special interest are the fonds: Magistrát města Moravská Ostrava (1941 - 1945) which contains informations about the deportation of Jews from Ostrava which were deportated in autumn 1939 to Nisko or to Theresienstadt 1941-1943. This fonds contains more material about the Aryanization of Jewish property. The fonds NSDAP, okresní vedení Moravská Ostrava (1939 - 1945) (Kreisleitung der Nazional-sozialistischen deutschen Arbeiterpartei in Mährisch Ostrau 1939 - 1945) contains questionnaires about Jewish occupations.

Opening Times

The Reading Room of the Ostrava City Archives is open: Mondays and Wednesdays: 9:00 - 17:30; Tuesdays and Thursdays: 8:00 - 16:00

Conditions of Access

Five pieces of archival material can be ordered at once and will be available in the reading room after 2 yours. Archival material can be ordered on the basis of finding helps after registration in advance online. More material can be ordered only for the next day.
