History

"The Central" was founded in 1920 by Nico Gunzburg, Maurice Tolkowsky and Joseph Long, under the name General Administration for Jewish Charity. The aim was first to the Jewish charity, disrupted by World War I, to get back going and to encourage private initiative. In addition, the founders sought through centralisation towards more coordination of the operation of the various organisations. Strict political and religious neutrality was aimed for.
