History

The Éclaireurs Israélites de France (EIF) and the Mouvement de Jeunesse Sioniste (MJS) formed in 1944-06 the Organisation Juive de Combat, a body of about 400 fighters. This group had links with both communist and non-communist resistance units.

The Armée Juive was a completely secret operation, established in 1941-01. Its members were recruited secretly, they swore their loyalty to the AJ on the Bible and the Zionist flag, and they even began training to fight before the organization had procured arms. It is unclear how many members the AJ actually had. Not all Zionist groups supported or trusted the AJ. The Éclaireurs Israélites de France was a French Jewish scouting movement, created by Robert Gamzon in 1923, which rescued thousands of Jews in France during the Second World War. Soon after war broke out in 1939-09, the Éclaireurs Israélites de France established several children’s homes in southwest France. After France fell to the German army in mid-1940, the EIF moved south to the unoccupied zone of France while still continuing to function illegally in Paris. O.89 - Collection of Personal Files of Jewish Underground Fighters in France Documentation regarding Jewish underground heroes who died in France or were deported from France to extermination camps collected by the Association of Jewish Resistance Veterans (ARJF). Copies of the original material have been transferred to the Museum. The original documentation is located in the Yad Vashem Archives; the photographs have been transferred to the Yad vashem Photo Archives. The original numbering of the files has been preserved despite the fact that many files are empty.
