History

As the chief executive agency charged with fighting internal ‘enemies of the state’, the Gestapo functioned as the Third Reich’s main surveillance and terror instrument, first within Germany and later in the territories occupied by Germany. After 1933 the Gestapo became part of a complex apparatus of state and party police agencies.

The Kriminalpolizei was headed by Arthur Nebe. They eventually came under control of the Sicherheitsdienst. In the occupied areas these men wore SS uniforms. Their duties related mainly to nonpolitical crimes, but on occasion they would lend support to the Geheime Staatspolizei in operations against Jews joining the Einsatzgruppen.

The Collection includes reports regarding the Stimmungsberichte (atmosphere; mood) among the members of SD units, the Gestapo, the Nazi Party and local authorities throughout Germany. Order from the Führer des SS Oberabschnittes österreich, Vienna, to all SS units referring to an order of Gauleiter Buerckel that all section leaders were to be responsible for preventing actions by the SS against Jews and that if measures have to be taken against Jews these would be carried out by the authorities and the Gestapo.It bears a stamp (in French) of the U.S. 3rd Army, which suggests it became a captured document probably during the occupation of Austria by the allies at the end of the war.

Founded in 1936

A openly fascist party, the Parti Populaire Française, was founded in 1936 by Jacques Doriot. The PPF soon claimed a membership of about 100,000 drawn, in spite of a program that favored big business, from the lower middle and working classes, from some young intellectuals, and from a significant number of militants who came to it from parties of the left. Though Doriot tried to restrain his more exuberant followers, the PFF, became more overtly anti-Semitic and fascist. The PPF worked closely with the Gestapo.

This branch of the German police comprised the Gestapo (Secret State Police), the Kriminalpolizei (Criminal Police), and the Grenzpolizei (Border Police). As chief of the Sicherheitspolizei as well as the Sicherheitsdienst, Reinhard Heydrich merged the two organizations by establishing the Reich Security Main Office in September 1939. The Sicherheitspolizei helped to supply the forces of the Einsatzgruppen, which served as both security police and mobile killing units in German-occupied territories.
