Werber, Abusz
Biographical History
Abusz Werber settled in Charleroi, Belgium in 1929, coming from Poland. He was one of the main leaders of the Belgian Linke Poale Zion – at first of the youth section, later of the party itself. In 1940, Werber was the successor of Yehudah Tilberg as leader of the Linke Poale Zion, and later of its social branch Secours Mutuel (of which he entrusted the presidency to Fela Perelman). Werber represented his party within the Conseil des Associations juives de Bruxelles (1938-1940) and, during the war, in the Comité de Défense des Juifs, the Jewish resistance umbrella organisation. Werber and his wife, Sziffra (Sophie) Trocki-Musnicki-Werber – the sister of YIVO-collector and fellow party member David Trocki – were also engaged in publishing the clandestine press of their party. After the war, the couple worked as administrators of the organisation Aide aux Israélites Victimes de la Guerre. Werber became responsible for its social service, from 1945 onwards. In 1954 Werber migrated to Israel.
