Schwarzbart, Isaac Ignacy
Biographical History
Isaac Schwarzbart was a Polish Zionist leader. Already active in Zionist circles during his youth, he became the chairman of the Zionist Federation in West Galicia and Silesia. Schwarzbart was one of the founders of the World Movement of General Zionists, presiding the organisation (1931-1935) and later one of its offshoots, the General Zionists B. He was a member of the Zionist General Council from 1933 onwards, and was elected to the Polish parliament in 1938. Having fled to Romania at the outbreak of the Second World War, Schwarzbart became a member of the Polish government-in-exile in Paris and London (1940-1945). He led the administrative department of the World Jewish Congress in the USA, where he lived since 1946. Schwarzbart also wrote articles and books on Polish-Jewish history.
