Loewe, Rose

Rose Henriques (née Loewe) was born to a wealthy British family. After the outbreak of the First World War, she joined her husband in founding a club for Jewish boys in London’s East End. The couple carried out a wide range of welfare work in the Jewish community during the war and afterwards. In 1943 Rose Henriques became active in the Jewish Committee for Relief Abroad, an organisation involved in planning the urgent relief for surviving Jews in Europe after the Second World War. She served as the head of the Germany department of this organisation between 1945 and 1950; she notably led one of its Jewish Relief Units into the liberated Bergen-Belsen camp.
