  3. Concentration camp uniform cap worn by a Jewish German man

    Concentration camp uniform cap issued to Werner Sauer while interned in Stutthof concentration camp as a German marine deserter in early 1945. The cap is lined with cloth because German military deserters were treated better than Jewish prisoners. The hats Werner had been issued previously as a Jewish inmate were not lined. Werner saved the cap, and refused to ever have it cleaned, as evidence of his ordeal.     Contains a typewritten statement given by former political prisoner Rudolf Hess of Bad Cannstatt (Stuttgart), Germany, to Lt. Frank Caplan (donor’s father) at Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, on May 18, 1945. The report documents former Hess’s arrest by Nazi authorities in 1943 and his imprisonment in the Dachau concentration camp, where he was subjected to medical experimentation. Hess was then transported to another concentration camp and, after an eight-day journey, arrived at Neuengamme concentration camp where he was a forced laborer.   12. Calling card brought to the US by an Austrian refugee

    Calling card for Lizzy Hirschfeld found in the autograph album, 1994.53.6.1, owned by Irene Rosenthal. Irene fled Nazi ruled Austria for the United States in March 1940. German troops marched over the border into Austria in March 1938. The next day, Austria was annexed to Nazi Germany. Anti-Jewish legislation was enacted to strip Jews of their civil rights. The November 1938 Kristallnacht pogrom vandalized Jewish businesses and homes and destroyed most of the synagogues in Austria. Irene received a visa to leave Austria in March and sailed that month from Genoa, Italy, to New York.

    Circular cloth Star of David patch that 21 year old Angela Weissmann was forced to wear in Piatra Neamt, Romania, ca. 1941-1945. In November 1940, the fascist government of General Antonescu joined the Axis Alliance. They immediately put in place policies to persecute Jews, such as the requirement that Jews wear a Jewish star badge on their clothing at all times. The antisemitic regime also supported increasingly violent attacks and pogroms against the Jewish population.

    Contains a black-and-white photographic print of a pile of corpses in the newly-liberated Dachau concentration camp, kept in an envelope from Rays Photo Service, La Crosse, Wisconsin; no inscription on verso. The image was part of a series taken by the Yugoslav Prisoner Committee and widely distributed to American soldiers; dated May 4, 1945. Acquired by Private Louis Lex, Jr. (donor’s father) who served in the US Army during WWII as a member of the 66th Black Panther Division, 264th Regiment, 3rd Battalion, Company L.
