  3. Enslein family collection

    Contains photographs, documents and correspondence illustrating the experiences of Jakob Enslein and his wife, Margarete Einstein Enslei, and their two children Kurt and Hans Gerd [donor, b. 1929]. Gerd was born in Cologne, Germany, and in 1932 his parents relocated the family first to Belgium then in 1933 to France, first to Paris and then Collias, Nimes and Perigaux, before eventually fleeing through Spain and arriving in the United States in early May 1941.

    Prayer book given to David Bajer, 25, on a 1947 trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands. He went inside a synagogue and the rabbi gave him a set of tefillin to use and to keep and David picked up this prayer book as well. David was the only survivor from a very devout family from Kozienice, Poland. Although he lost faith in Judaism during the Holocaust, he kept this siddur with him as a talisman for seventy years. He decided to donate the book to the Museum, but brought the book to the Museum for three weeks in a row before he finally had the courage to donate it on May 31, 2017. Kozienice was occup...

    Sign: "Gefangenen Sammelstelle." [Prisoner collection point]. In the countryside, mass of civilian POWs stand behind roped-off area; pan of mass of soldiers (POWs) sitting on the ground, also roped-off. VAR CUs of civilians as they are frisked (some wear caps, all look shabby). The narrator states that the prisoners consist mainly of Jews, and that through the actions of the Fuerher Germany is protected from this danger. The camera lingers on a few individual faces. POWs flood train platform and embark onto waiting train. Endless line of prisoners march 4-5 abreast along the railroad tracks...

    Collection of four photographic prints documenting victims found in the Dachau and Nordhausen concentration camps immediately following liberation; one photo captioned on verso in English; dated April-May 1945. Photographer unknown, prints were given to donor by a fellow American soldier while serving in Europe following World War II.

Also includes a proposal from 1929 for the appointment of members of an election commission, among them several Jews, and records pertaining to detention camp for prisoners of war (Serbs and French) in Humenné.

    Consists of two bound collections of printed campaign materials relating to the September 14, 1930 and July 31, 1932 Reichstag elections in Germany. The materials include clippings from newspapers and magazines as well as some illustrated advertisements, small propaganda pieces, and political cartoons. Both volumes are labeled "Material Reichstagswahl" with their corresponding dates.

  17. David Finck collection

    The David Finck collection includes a letter addressed to David Finck, donor’s father, from Albert Einstein. The letter expresses Albert Einstein’s gratitude for Mr. Finck’s “work…[he] had undertaken on behalf of the [Jewish] refugees during Dedication Week…” dated June 10, 1939, written on Einstein’s personal stationary to Mr. Finck, who was a life-long supporter and advocate of Jewish causes.
