    This "Sonderbericht der Deutschen Wochenschau" [Special report of the German weekly newsreel] starts on April 4, 1941 with footage of Goebbels addressing the German people via radio and von Ribbentrop delivering diplomatic letters to the ambassadors of Yugoslavia and Greece. Then soldiers, armored personal carriers, and tanks cross the Yugoslav border into Croatia from Styria, thus opening the Southeastern front of WWII after an alleged 'new provocation by the British.'     Host: Carl Sagan. Guest: George Kistiakowsky (1900-1982), designed and built the chemical charge that triggered the first nuclear explosion. Sagan interviews Kistiakowsky about his involvement in nuclear weapons. Program discusses the history of the nuclear arms race and the "grave threat" of the human future. Kistiakowsky says that a nuclear war is probable and that only our efforts will help stop it.

    A hand-written letter from Albert Einstein, addressed to his sister Maja Winteler-Einstein, dated December 14, 1938, in which Einstein encourages his sister to visit him in America on a visitor’s visa and describes the relief work he is undertaking on behalf of persecuted victims of Nazi Germany.

  16. Erwin Haber papers

    The Erwin Haber papers consist of correspondence written by Erwin Haber, brother of Kitty Goldberg, written in August 1942. The correspondence relates the experiences of Erwin Haber and include a letter he threw from a train as we was being deported from Malines (Mechelen), Belgium, in August 1942. The letter was found by a stranger and mailed to his family.

    Collection of two (2) Deutsches Reich Reisepass passports issued in Vienna, Austria to Vera Degen and Max Klüger (donor and donor’s husband); stamped with red ink “J” identifying them as Jewish. Max’s passport was issued March 29, 1939, Vera’s was issued on December 12, 1938; both immigrated to the United States in April 1939; in German, French, English.
