Includes areas which had been incorporated into or were controlled by Germany. The map is stamped as having been owned by Major John Hinkel (later Colonel), a paratrooper who fought in the Italian campaign during World War II.

    1942 map of Litzmannstadt (Łódź), Poland with an alphabetical street directory. The city had been occupied and annexed by Nazi Germany one week after the September 1, 1939, invasion. The Germans renamed the city Litzmannstadt, after the General Karl Litzmann, who had conquered the city during World War I. Łódź had the second largest Jewish population in Poland and, in February 1940, they were relocated to a small, closed ghetto. It is believed that "Trude" is Trude Frank, a cousin of Lore Rosen [donor] who survived the war and "disappeared" in East Germany shortly thereafter.
