  4. Sonja Alaimo collection

    Contains a manuscript, unpublished, written by Sonja Alaimo, describing her experiences fleeing Novi Sad in Yugoslavia and being interned on the island of Korcula under Italian occupation. Born Sofia Backman in 1927 to Jakob and Maria Backman, Sonia and her mother fled to Korcula in 1941. Sonia’s father, Jakob, was interned until late 1941 and then also came to Korcula. In 1943, they were then sent to Italy where the family remained until they came to New York in 1947.

    Consists of one cylindrical clay disc of the type which were attached to deceased prisoners' bodies during cremation to easily identify the ashes. Though the original origins of this disc, numbered 8745, are unknown, such discs were used at Theresienstadt, Sachsenhausen, Majdanek, and similar discs were also discovered at Belzec.

    Photocopies of two declarations made by the donor’s parents, Joseph and Celina de Jong, originally of Amsterdam, at the Rijksinstitut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie (present-day NIOD), describing their experiences during the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II, and their arrest and deportation to concentration camps, including Auschwitz-Birkenau. Donation includes English translations of the Dutch texts, created by the donor.

    Watercolor painting of Auschwitz concentration camp in German-occupied Poland painted by Holocaust survivor Fred Veston in Albuquerque, New Mexico after his immigration in 1955. Fred was a jeweler who lived in Kraków, Poland, with his wife and two daughters, when Germany invaded on September 1, 1939. Within a week, Kraków was occupied and the Germans initiated immediate measures aimed at persecuting the Jews of the city. They took Fred’s store, the family’s apartment, and their valuables.
