    Handbill received by Sergeant Donald Schaufelberger while serving in the US Army in Germany in May 1945. Issued by the US Army, the handbill uses an image of piled rows of concentration camp corpses discovered at Mauthausen concentration camp to remind soldiers not to fraternize with German civilians.

    Small suitcase carried by thirteen year old Max Dobriner (later Geoffrey Dickson) in July 1939 when he was sent by his parents Julius and Hertha from Germany to Great Britain on a Kindertransport.

  4. Small suitcase used by a former hidden child to emigrate to the US

    Childsize suitcase used by 12 year old Michel Jeruchim when he and his siblings emigrated to the United States in October 1949. Among the items he carried in it was, Les Aventures de Jambo, an illustrated book created for him by his brother Simon. Nazi Germany occupied France in June 1940. Michel, then age 3, his parents, Samuel and Sonia, and his siblings, 14 year old Alice, and 10 year old Simon, remained in the Paris suburbs. Also, one postcard sent to Irena Smietanowska from friends in Rovno, 1940.

  7. Smoliarka and Bronna-Gura forest photograph collection

    The collection consists of three photographs take in forests near Bereza Kartuska, Poland (Biaroza, Belarus). The photographs depict the Smoliarka forest, located 7-8 kilometers from Bereza Kartuska, that was the site of an execution of 1800-2000 Jews in 15-16 October 1942, and a house and trees near Bronna Góra, where at least 50,000 Jews were murdered in 1942.

    The fonds contains the documents of the Assembly of the Slovak Republic (Snem Slovenskej republiky) which was the parliament of the Slovak Republic (1939-1945). Among others, it contains also documents pertaining to the adoption of anti-Jewish laws (such as for example the Act No. 113/1940 on Jewish businesses and Jews employed in businesses) in 1939-1945 Assembly. Among the most important ones are the minutes from the sessions of the Assembly, transcripts of the speeches of various members of the Assembly as well as documents of various Assembly committees.

  12. Soap from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp

    Bar of soap issued to 15-year-old Erwin Dankner in June 1944 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. The soap was never used. Erwin, his parents, Henry and Catherina, and his brother, Anthony, arrived in Bergen-Belsen by train from Budapest, Hungary, as part of a rescue effort organized by Rezso Kasztner. Later in 1944, the family was transferred to safety in Switzerland.

    Soap issued to Esther Moses, October-November 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Esther Zelmanovits Moses was interred in Auschwitz-Birkenau. She was given this bar of soap when she was sent to work in Hamburg on November 26, 1944. She carried it with her for the remainder of the war. Her husband, Herbert Moses hid the bar of soap in his father-in-law's, Sam Zelman, store in Kansas.

    The collection consists of 361 photographs (two albums and loose photographs) and dozens of paper documents that depict Johann Niemann’s social background, his family, and his SS career, including his advancement through the concentration camp system (Esterwegen and Sachsenhausen) and the T4 euthanasia program (Grafeneck, Brandenburg and Bernburg) to the Operation Reinhard death camps (Belzec and Sobibor). There are an additional 15 photographs, three publications, and one wallet.
