Singer was a neurologist and the Director of the Berlin Opera. Soon after the Nazis came to power in 1933, he lost his position at the Opera due to a law that ousted Jewish civil servants from public positions. Noel was taught and certified as a shoemaker in the Organization for Rehabilitation through Training (ORT) vocational training program at the camp. Noel, 27, was a soldier in the Polish Army during the German invasion on September 1, 1939. Seventeen days later, the Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland and Noel was captured.
