  1. Lavoslav Schick (Šik) collection

    Personal papers of Lavoslav Schick (Šik). The collection consists of several hundred of his manuscripts, articles, speeches, reports, and extensive correspondence with individuals and organizations throughout Europe. Lavoslav Schick was a prominent Zagreb lawyer, killed in the Jasenovac concentration camp. He was a Zionist, but of the kind who did not wish to actually leave for Palestine themselves, and a well-known public figure in Zagreb’s inter-war period. Zagreb’s Jewish history cannot be told without talking or examining of his work.

  3. Tallit

    Tallit found in German home by Manfred Hohenemser, an American GI who was a German Jewish refugee. After his unit liberated the Ohrdruf concentration camp, they moved on to the town of Eisenbach near the Austrian border. Manfred was ordered to conduct a house to house search, and while doing so, he saw the tallit being used as a tablecloth in one of the homes. Furious, he ripped the tallit off the table and took it with him.

The Gherla synagogue was used in 1944 as a short-term detention place for Jews before they were interned in the Gherla brick factory which was used as a ghetto.     Contains correspondence of Va'ad Ha'Hatzala for a visa to the United States for Yitzchak Singer, a Holocaust survivor and yeshiva student who was found in Bergen-Belsen. Among the documents is a letter signed by Rosalie Stive of the immgiration department of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee; and letters from rabbis in the United States to immigration authorities about accepting the boy to the yeshiva with a full scholarship, signed by Rabbi Yosef Shevlowitz and Rabbi Yosef Baumel.     Prayer book given to David Bajer, 25, on a 1947 trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands. He went inside a synagogue and the rabbi gave him a set of tefillin to use and to keep and David picked up this prayer book as well. David was the only survivor from a very devout family from Kozienice, Poland. Although he lost faith in Judaism during the Holocaust, he kept this siddur with him as a talisman for seventy years.     Letter hand-written in German by Albert Einstein datelined Princeton, October 10, 1938, addressed to his friend Dr. Michele Besso in Berne, Switzerland. In the letter, Einstein describes his attempts to help European Jews by issuing affidavits, his frustration over the fact that he can no longer issue affidavits for fear of endangering ones still pending, and his helplessness to further assist the Jews. He also discusses Hitler’s political and military actions taking place in Europe.
