  15. Staff Sgt. Bernard Kemper collection

    Consists of 51 photographs taken by Staff Sgt. Bernard Kemper, a member of the United States Army, upon the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Includes photographs of reburial, of German citizens forced to tour the camp, and of corpses prior to reburial. The photos are described as having been taken in Leipzig at the “Tigler” concentration camp, though the images are of Buchenwald, near Leipzig. Also includes copies of Bernard Kempner’s honorable discharge and separation record.

    Consists of five photographs taken by Lt. Albert Montenaro, a member of the 4th Armored Division, after the liberation of the Ohrdruf concentration camp. Includes photographs of corpses and of a pyre in which bodies were burned before liberation.

Includes a large certificate acknowledging Heinrich Steinbach as a bank director, official documents they filled out prior to immigration, the passenger list for their December 1938 immigration to the United States, and wartime family correspondence.

  18. Herbert Steinhouse collection

    Consists of one photograph and photocopies from the collection of Herbert Steinhouse, who was in Europe working for the UNRAA and JDC after the war. The photograph depicts displaced persons in the Bergen-Belsen DP camp, and the collection also contains photocopies and descriptions of post-war Bergen-Belsen photographs and information about Mr. Steinhouse.

Entries describe time spent in Biarritz, an arrest in Hossegor, plans of fleeing to England, and her attempts to save her aunt, Loulou Warshawsky, from a camp near Tours.
