Acquisition

The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 1993 by Elizabeth Scharf, the wife of Louis Herman Scharf.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a concentration camp uniform jacket and Star of David badge relating to the experiences of Louis Hermann and Elizabeth Rosenbaum Scharf during the Holocaust, when they were deported from German occupied Hungary to Auschwitz concentration camp and then Louis was transferred to Buchenwald, Dora-Mittelbau, Ravensbruck, and Woebbelin concentration camps and Elizabeth was sent to Stutthof concentration camp.

Concentration camp uniform jacket worn by Dr. Hermann Scharf, 38, in Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dora-Mittelbau, Ravensbrück, and Woebbelin concentration camps from May 1944 to May 1945. It has a white patch with his Buchenwald prisoner ID number, 55857. Hermann and his wife Elizabeth lived in Irsava, Czechoslovakia, which was annexed by Hungary in fall 1938, then occupied by Germany in March 1944. Yellow Star of David patch, printed with Jude, German for Jew, worn by Dr. Hermann Scharf or his wife Elizabeth, who were from Irsava and interned in Berehove ghetto and multiple concentration camps from March 1944 until May 1945.
