Acquisition

The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2022 by Carole Naggar.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of photos taken by George Rodger of Bergen-Belsen at liberation as well as a silver cigarette case created in Bergen-Belsen given to fellow internee Alina Szapocznikow (1942-1943). Both were received by the donor.

Silver cigarette case etched with an image of a gazelle jumping over chimney stacks by an internee who gave the case to Polish-Jewish sculptor Alina Szapocznikow while she was imprisoned at Bergen-Belsen. The case was given to the donor by the widow of Roman Cieslewicz. Cieslewicz was married to Szapocznikow before her death in 1973.
