Acquisition

The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2013 by Irene Wojtas, the wife of Eugene Wojtas.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of a forced labor badge, documents, and photographs relating to the experiences of Eugeniusz Wojtas and Irena Wojcik Wojtas, Roman Catholics who were persecuted in German occupied Poland during World War II when both Eugeniusz, a prisoner of war, and Irena, were assigned to forced labor in Germany, and, after the war, when they met and married as displaced persons.

Nazi Germany invaded Poland on September 1, and three weeks later, the Soviet Union invaded from the east. Eugeniusz, a Polish Catholic, was serving in the 43 Pulk Piechoty [Infantry Division) in Dubno and was captured by the Soviets on September 20.
