Leather briefcase used by Runia and Szlama Majzels (later Samuel Maizels) when they emigrated from Hamburg, Germany, to Baltimore, Maryland in 1950. Runia and Szlama were both born in Kraśnik, Poland. In September 1939, in accordance with the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Germany invaded western Poland while the Soviet army annexed eastern Poland. German forces occupied Kraśnik on September 15. In February 1941, Runia was forcibly transported from Krasnik to the city of Lublin, and transferred to Majdanek killing center after it was constructed that fall.
