Acquisition

The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2006 by Diane Kyle, the niece of Hans Praschkauer.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of artifacts (two pins and one armband), composition books, correspondence, documents, publications, and scrapbooks related to the prewar, wartime, and postwar experiences of Hans (Heinz) Praschkauer, in Breslau, Germany, Shanghai, China, and the United States.

Nazi armband that belonged to Hans (Heinz) Praschkauer. Hans, a deaf German Jew, and his parents escaped Breslau, Germany, for Shanghai in 1939 on the Italian ship, Conte Verde. He worked as a tailor in Shanghai until 1949, when he and his parents joined his brother in the United States.
