Acquisition

The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum by Howard Zar in 2001 and 2002.

Scope and Content

Consists of documents relating to Rose and Mayer Zar's (formerly Szoszana and Mayer Zarnowiecki), the donor's parents' residence in different DP camps in Germany and two suits that were handmade for the Zars in a DP camp. The documents include inoculation certificates; registration cards; a birth certificate of their first son Awiron Zarnowiecki, born on 9 Aug.1948, his death certificate indicating that the little boy drowned on 29 May 1951, reparations payment certificates, and announcements. The collection includes accretions. Some of these materials may be combined into a single collection in the future.

Consists of a false birth certificate, false identification card, and false “Kennkarte,” all issued to the donor’s mother, Wanda Regina Gajda (real name Roza Guterman); a certificate of incarceration issued to Majer Zarnowiecki, prisoner no. 94926, stating that he was born in Piotrkow Trybunalski on 17 January 1921, and was incarcerated in a sub camp of Buchenwald; and documents, dated 1946-1950, relating to the donor’s parents, Szoszana and Majer Lejb Zarnowiecki, and their vocational training and work in the Lindenfels displaced persons camp.

Consists of a photograph album assembled by the donor’s parents, Rose and Mayer Zar, documenting their activities with “Hashomer Hatzair” youth in the Lindenfels displaced persons camp and 73 photographic portraits that Jewish child survivors presented as a parting memento to Rose and Mayer Zar. Most of the children survived in hiding during the Holocaust. Rose and Mayer Zar prepared the children for emigration to Palestine.
