Acquisition

Archives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (AICRC) received the dossiers ofseries G 59 after World War II. International Committee of the Red Cross filmed the records for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives in 1996.

Scope and Content

Contains working files of Hans Bachmann, personal secretary to Carl J. Burkhardt, relating to assistance to Jews in various countries and civilian detainees of concentration camps in Germany from 1939 to 1945; administrative records of the Department of Special Assistance (DAS) relating to actions in favor of Jews; records relating to materials and moral assistance from the International Red Cross (ICRC) on behalf of European Jews; general records relating to ghettos, internment camps, and concentration camps for Jews; records relating to ICRC appeals to various governments asking for respect of war laws and the Geneva Conventions and appeals of states and national societies of the Red Cross, organizations and individuals asking the ICRC to intervene in cases of violations of the laws and conventions; records relating to the emigration of Jews from Europe to Palestine and other countries; records relating to ICRC relations with the League of Nations to address the question of refugees in Europe, especially Jews fleeing persecution in Germany; ICRC work with Jewish, and other, organizations; records relating to deportation of Jews from European countries, including cases of individuals and testimonies of Nazi atrocities; records relating to proposals and projects to improve the situation of Jews in Europe; records relating to inquiries and requests for help onbehalf of Jews imprisoned or deported by the Nazis, and negotiations of the ICRC with German authorities on the subject of victims of racial persecution; records relating to requests of individuals for help for persecuted Jews; records relating to ICRC visits to concentration camps,prisons, and ghettos; and records relating to the ICRC diplomatic mission to Iraq on the subject of the Israeli-Arab conflict, 1949-1950.
