Acquisition

The collection was donated to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2014 by Roman Schenkkan.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of two forced labor badges, documents, and correspondence relating to the experiences of Maurits Schenkkan before and after the Holocaust in Belgium and during the Holocaust when he was incarcerated in Cosel, a sub-camp of Auschwitz, and Anhalt, Graeditz, Langenbielau, Faulbrueck, and Reichenbach slave labor camps.

Documents and correspondence illustrating the experiences of Maurits Schenkkan, born in 1912 in Berchem, Belgium, who lived in the Netherlands and married to a Catholic German woman, Maria Antosckiewisz. Maurits was deported to Westerbork internment camp in the Netherlands and from there towards Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.
