Biographical History

Fragmentary personal fonds of professor Yeshayahu Andrej Jelínek who was affiliated at the university in Israel. Prof. Jelínek was in born in Czechoslovakia and he emigrated to Israel in 1968. He became an expert on the Eastern European history in the period of the World War II and consequences of fascism on the Jewish nation. He is the author of numerous publications and papers on Holocaust, co-founder of the Slovak Studies Association in Slovakia and organizer of the 1st historical conference on Slovak State (1939 – 1945) within the AAASS Congress at Yale University. Prof. Jelinek initiated unveiling the memorial table to the victims and fascism in the city of Prievidza and honoring Jozef Sivák, former Minister of Education and National Enlightenment of the Slovak State, Righteous among the Nations (in memoriam) in 1999.

Acquisition

Fonds of prof. Jelínek is the acquisition of Slovak National Museum – Museum of Jewish Culture and it is stored in the Archive of the Slovak National Museum in Bratislava. Correspondence of prof. Jelínek was obtained by Prof. Dr. Pavol Mešťan, CSc., the director of the Slovak National Museum - Museum of Jewish Culture.

Scope and Content

Fragmentary personal fonds of prof. Jelínek contains numerous copies of his correspondence from the years 1988 – 1998. Letters are mainly dedicated to the professor´s main field of study – Slovak State (1939 – 1945) and Jewish persecution, especially on information about relevant sources and literature, as well as on the contemporary phenomenon of anti-Semitism with specific focus on the territory of Slovakia and Czech lands. Correspondence is mainly pertaining the discussions with Slovak, American and Canadian historians who are dealing with Central European History. Some of the letters are addressed to the universities, publishing houses and also to the Slovak politicians in the context of rising anti-Semitism in Slovakia and inadequate interpretation of Slovak history.
