Biographical History

According to the first Vienna Arbitration in November 1938, Jablonov nad Turňou (in Hungarian Szádalmás) was annexed to the Hungarian Kingdom. The Notary Office was responsible for the management of the local agenda of Jablonov nad Turňou and its neighboring localities, Silická Jablonica (in Hungarian Jablonca), Hrušov (in Hungarian Körtvélyes) and Derenk (today it is in the territory of Hungary). Although according to the Hungarian census of 1941, there were 19 Israelites who lived in Jablonov, in the collection many documents related to the Anti-Jewish regulations and the persecution of the Jews in the territory of the Abov-Turňa County have been preserved.

Scope and Content

The agenda of the Notary Office of Jablonov nad Turňou holds records of the local administration in the period between 1939 and 1944, including various archival sources on the Anti-Jewish measures, the persecution of Jews, and the Aryanization of Jewish property in the territory of ňAbov-Turňa County in 1944. Most of the documents on Anti-Jewish persecution might be found in the boxes n. 15 - 18. As for these files, one might find here inventories of closed Jewish artifacts, lists of apartments owned by Jews until April 1944 in Jablonov nad Turňou, and documents regarding the property left behind by Jews (for example bicycles, and radios). Furthermore, there are various files related to József Fazekas, who until October 1944 was the chief constable (főszolgabíró) of the Turňa District, later, between October 1944 and January 1945 was appointed as the mayor of Košice being a representant of the Hungarian Arrow Cross Party. Fazekas was responsible for the ghettoization of the Jews living in the area of the Turňa District, and afterwards also for the Aryanization and sale of their property.
