Bastiaan Kamerbeek sloot zich aan bij de Nederlandse Arbeidsdienst en diende vijf maanden als chauffeur nabij Lemberg en Rostow. Na de Duitse capitulatie vestigde hij zich in Neugarmssiel waar hij Käthe Aurin leerde kennen. Toen hij in augustus 1948 clandestien de grens overstak, werd hij door Nederlandse marechaussee gearresteerd.
