Documentation regarding the persecution of Jews by the Nazis from the record group: Der Polizeipraesident in Berlin (The President of the Police in Berlin, in the postwar years), dated, 1933-1947 The collection concerns materials from the division of the post-WWII Police force of Berlin (for materials regarding the Berlin Police under the Nazi regime, see collection 4423357 in "Sapir"). Following the order given by the Soviet City Commander of Berlin, the city's Police headquarters were re-established on 20 May 1945. Based on an order given by the Allied headquarters, special Police offices were set up in each of the urban sectors on 19 September 1945. When Berlin was divided in 1948, the Police for the western part of Berlin was reestablished. When Germany and the city of Berlin were reunited in 1990, the Police forces were also united. The files in this record group contain materials from the Nazi period; the materials relevant to the Yad Vashem Archive were copied and included in the collection. The collection includes materials from 17 files from the original division, two of which were copied entirely. The documentation includes materials regarding the function of the Police in the National Socialist (Nazi) State; regulations regarding protective custody (Schutzhaft); the treatment of Jews; food supply for Jews; and Jewish forced labor. There are also activity reports (Taetigkeitsberichte) of Police posts located in various parts of the city of Berlin (Charlottenburg, Shoeneberg, Siemensstadt, Lichtenfelde and Tempelhof). Specific subjects included the collection: - Arrests of Jews; - Suicides by Jews; - Discrimination against Jews in daily life (e.g. the opening up of Jewish apartments, anti-Jewish propaganda, prohibitions against the selling of merchandise, the closure of Jewish stores, passports for Jews, shopping hours for Jews, and so forth); - War economy regulations and the treatment of Jews; - Certificates of "Aryan" ancestry (Ariernachweis); - Protective custody (Schutzhaft); - Confiscation of Jewish property in the occupied territories in the East; - Number of Jews in Germany in October 1940; - "Educational" material regarding the National Socialist (Nazi) world-view.
