Memoirs of Esther (Stern) Michaeli, born in Sosnowiec, Poland, 1927, regarding her experiences in the Sosnowiec Ghetto and in Auschwitz and Parschnitz camps Life in the Sosnowiec Ghetto; detention of Jewish males; release of her father from detention due to her asking a German officer to intervene; smuggling fabrics out of the ghetto for sale in exchange for food; concentration of the Jews in the square before a selection; parting from her younger brother before her deportation on a transport to Auschwitz; arrival at the camp and selection in the presence of Mengele; being chosen together with 60 young women for transfer to Parschnitz; camp life; daily death toll of female inmate friends; finding a notice of the upcoming defeat of Germany in her mattress during a search in the barracks; receiving beatings by the German commander for days on end; being kept alive due to the intervention from the factory in which she labored on grounds of her being an essential worker; hospitalized unconscious in a clinic; viewing the inmates who were transferred to the camp on a death march, March 1945; housing the inmates at night in stables; inmates who did not succeed in getting up for the march buried alive by female inmates hand-picked by the concentration camp staff; change in behavior of the concentration camp staff the night before liberation; planting landmines around the camp by the German guards before their escape; liberation by the Red Army, 09 May 1945.
