Biographical History

Ioannis Deligiannis was born in 1920 in Athens. His father, Georgios Deligiannis, was a notary in Thessaloniki. Ioannis grew up in Thessaloniki, where he completed studies at the Law School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH).

In 1955 He was appointed professor of Civil Law at the Faculty of Law and Economics of the University of Thessaloniki. He retired in 1988 but continued to teach as a Professor Emeritus until 1997. He taught family law, inheritance law and labor law. He published monographs, articles, and writings and was a member of many of international and Greek legal companies and associations.

At the AUTH he was a Dean of the Faculty of Law and Economics in the years 1969-1970, member of the Senate in the years 1968- 1969 and 1974-1975, vice-chancellor in the year 1974- 1975 and rector in the year 1976-1977. In 1983 was elected as a corresponding member at the Academy of Athens.

Deligianis participated as president or member in legislative committees since 1975 and throughout the 1980s. In 1964 he served for three months as an official Secretary General of the Ministry of the Northern Greece. In the same Ministry, which was renamed as “Ministry of Macedonia Thrace”, he returned as Minister of the Governments of I. Grivas (president of the Supreme Court and official Prime Minister) and of X. Zolotas (12.10.1989- 12.4.1990).

Deligiannis was also a member of the Board of Directors of the AHEPA Hospital for many years. He was also a member of many charitable foundations and cultural associations. He donated his rich library to the School of Law of the AUTH, that bears his name.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of two sections. The first section concerns the academic career and the social action of Deligiannis. Participation in conferences, suggestions, articles, material about family law and teaching material. It also contains correspondence with his colleagues and institutions, and material from the administrative positions he held.

The second section consists of legal cases undertaken by his legal office. There are many cases of divorce, contracts, real estate, corporate and civil disputes.

Important for the history of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki are some records relating to lawsuits by Jewish individuals against other private individuals, the Greek State and the Organization for Treatment and Rehabilitation Israelites of Greece (OPAIE).

There are restrictions on reproduction regulated by the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the E.U. and the incorporation of the law in the Greek legislation 4624/2019 (Government Gazette A'137).
