Biographical History

The Organization for the Relief and Rehabilitation of Greek Jews (OPAIE) was a Legal Entity under Public Law. OPAIE was founded by a decree of the Greek State in 1949, after the attempts of prominent members of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece. It succeeded Y.D.I.P. (Agency for the Custody of Jewish Property) which had supervised the expropriation and seizure of Jewish business, warehouses and properties. The main aim of the Organization was to handle the properties of Greek Jews who had been deported and exterminated during 1943-1944 and to rehabilitate those who survived the Holocaust. OPAIE's headquarters were in Athens. Up untill 1979 there was a branch in Thessaloniki in order to deal with the complexities that emerged with the trustees of Jewish businesses since 1943.
