History

The Regional Archives should not be confused with the National Archives in Gothenburg, which is a state archive and part of the National Archives.

Geographical and Cultural Context

The Regional Archive for Region Västra Götaland and the City of Gothenburg is an archive that stores documents from and supervises archive management within Region Västra Götaland and the City of Gothenburg. The organization also includes Göteborgs föreningsarkiv. The archive is located in Gothenburg and Vänersborg.

Mandates/Sources of Authority

Since March 1, 1999, the Västra Götaland Region and the City of Gothenburg have had a joint board, the Archive Board for the Västra Götaland Region and the City of Gothenburg, which functions as an archive authority according to the Swedish Archival Act. The city and the region each appoint three members and three deputies to the board.

The Regional Archive is the archive board's administration, which preserves and provides public documents from the City of Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland, as well as from the defunct county councils of Gothenburg and Bohus County Council, Skaraborg County Council and Älvsborg County Council. It also works with supervision and advice for the city's and region's authorities and companies. In addition, it preserves archives donated or deposited by associations in Gothenburg.

Building(s)

Arkivdepå Göteborg with Göteborgs föreningsarkiv is located at Otterhällegatan 5 in Gothenburg. The municipal section was called Göteborgs Stads Arkivkontor from 1948 and Göteborgs Stadsarkiv from 1975. Before 1993 it was located at Haga Kyrkoplan.

Since 2008, Arkivdepå Vänersborg is located at Niklasbergsvägen 14 in the Holmängen district.

Archival and Other Holdings

The Regional Archive preserves and provides public documents from the City of Gothenburg and Region Västra Götaland, as well as from the defunct county councils of Gothenburg and Bohus County Council, Skaraborg County Council and Älvsborg County Council. In addition, it preserves archives donated or deposited by associations in Gothenburg. One of these archives is the archive of the Jewish Congregation in Gothenburg, which contains sources on the congregation's relationship and response to the Nazi persecution of Jews and the Holocaust.
