History

History of the archive started in 1923 when the new Soviet authorities established Archival Bureau of the Tsaritsyn Oblast. In the 1925, when the city and province name were changed it became Archival Bureau of the Stalingrad Oblast.

In the years 1926-1927 archival fonds were divided into two archives: Historical Archive (pre-Revolutionary period) and Archive of the October Revolution. In the 1938 both archives were back again united into the State Archive of the Stalingrad Oblast.

In the war years 1941-1945 the archival documents were partially evacuated to the city of Uralsk in the Northern Kazachstan. These were only 145,6 thousand out of 496,6 thousand documents, all the others perished during the siege of Stalingrad.

Remaining documents in 1944 were transported from Uralsk to the city of Kamyshyn. They came back to Stalingrad only in 1958. They were located in the new archival building, the same which hosts archive in the present day.

In 1961, due to next name change of the city and province, archive became State Archive of the Volgograd Oblast.
