History

The Department of Archives of Lithuania under the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, taking into account the administrative division of Lithuania, established the Utena County Archive in 1997 to collect, store and ensure the use of documents of Utena County administration, local self-government, and other institutions. The document funds of Anykščiai, Molėtai, Utena and Zarasai districts were transferred from the liquidated Ukmergė district archive to the Utena county archive.

Since 2017 The Utena county archive is connected to the Vilnius county archive. The newly operating archive is named after the Vilnius Regional State Archive. Since 2017, a structural division of the Vilnius Regional State Archive - a branch has been operating in Utena.

Geographical and Cultural Context

Preserves documents of the regional state, municipal, and non-state institutions and individuals of the Utena, Molėtai, Ignalina, Zarasai and Anykščiai districts from 1945 until the present day. Archives are also involved in the supervision of records management of local public institutions.

Mandates/Sources of Authority

The activities of the Archives have been arranged in accordance with the Lithuanian Constitution, European Union legislation, and additional laws that regulate the activities of the Archives as a public government office.

Archival and Other Holdings

The Utena County Archives comprise 2 sets of documents:

A set of documents relating to the Soviet occupation period (1944–1989): documents created by the local governments that were functioning on the territory of Utena County before 1990; institutions of law and order, justice, statistics, planning, finance, construction, architecture, transport, trade and cooperation, teaching and education, culture, health care; also industrial enterprises, state notary offices and public institutions. A set of documents relating to the period of Independence (since 1990): documents created by the state and municipal institutions, organisations and enterprises that have been functioning and still are functioning on the territory of Utena County. Despite the fact that the documents preserved in the Archives mainly refer to the post-war period, there are also documents (usually, in the property inheritance cases) dating to the period of the Russian Empire. The archival fonds occupy approximately 2,140 linear meters of shelving space.

Holocaust-related are records of various county agencies (State Notary, County Executive Council, People's Court etc.) related to the restitution and inheritance of the individual and communal Jewish property located in the Utena County after World War II.
