History

The Szeged Jewish Community’s Archive (SzJCA) has a complex and nuanced history that reflects the broader historical context of Hungary and the Jewish community. The archive was founded in the early 1990s by a group of local Jewish activists who sought to document and preserve the cultural heritage of the Jewish community in Szeged. Over the years, the SzJCA has accumulated a rich collection of materials, including photographs, documents, and manuscripts, related to the history of Jewish life in Szeged and the surrounding region. For the history of the archive, see: https://doi.org/10.56664/targum.2022.2.9

Geographical and Cultural Context

The spectrum of the archive is vast, containing official and private documents from a period of almost 200 years. The project vastly contributes to the availability of rare primary sources in the fields of Hungarian and Jewish history, as well as the history of economic development of Central and Eastern Europe. The archive contains various record groups of the Neolog Community of Szeged. It also contains various writings of the former rabbis and significant members, e.g. Lipót and Immánuel Löw, Jenő Frenkel, and Immánuel Zucker, as well as the families Holtzer, Back, Kotányi, Pick. The surviving records of the Orthodox Congregation of Szeged are also kept in the Community. The documents of the Szeged Jewish community are the remaining chronicles of the history of the community as well as records of the connections to almost all other Jewish communities of Hungary and other foreign Jewish communities and the majority population. The Szeged Jewish Community and its Archive also have various documents and vital registers of nearby Jewish communities (such as e.g. Szentes and Csongrád).

Records Management and Collecting Policies
