History

The predecessor of the National Educational Library and Museum was founded in 1877. The National Educational Library and Museum for School Equipment was opened in 1906. Between 1906-1914 was the golden age of the institution. Its collection contained more than 40.000 books included special books of the sciences of education, textbooks, school reports, children and youth literature. The Museum for School Equipment was closed in 1922, and the library was joint to the library of the Ministry of Education because of financial problems. Due to unsatisfactory conditions the library was wound up and its collection (ca. 100.000 books) was shared among libraries in 1933. The National Educational Library and Museum was refounded in 1958.

Archival and Other Holdings

The library focuses on documents in the fields of educational science and social science related to education and published or in connection with Hungary. The collection included also psychological and sociological documents reference books, and fiction books recommended in public education. Periodicals' collection consists of Hungarian educational journals; almanachs; journals for children and youth; selected foreign educational journals. There are special collections of schoolbooks, textbooks, children's literature, school reports and yearbooks of primary and secondary schools of Hungary.

Opening Times

The National Educational Library and Museum is open to researchers on Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:00 to 19:00, on Saturdays from 9:00 to 14:00 and on Mondays is closed.
