History
The Cartographic Heritage Archives were established in 2013, resuming the aims and activities of the Hellenic National Map Library (1997-2012). The institution is an organic unit at departmental level of the General State Archives of Greece (GSA) and it is administratively under the GSA Branch of the Historical Archive of Macedonia (IAM).
The Institution’s main aim is the management and diffusion of cartographic heritage in the context of the General State Archives of Greece (GSA).
Their main concern is to ensure the distinctive role of the maps in the archives, encouraging, supporting and expanding the accessibility to the GSA’s cartographic material, using the digital information and modern communication technologies.
Archival and Other Holdings
The Cartographic Heritage Archives are developing a Map Archive in two directions: The traditional analogical archive of printed maps and the digital map archive, which is of main concern in Archives' policy. The Archives collect maps of any type, with national and international interest, covering various periods and styles of map history.
The institution is cooperating with map collectors and with public and/or private institutions keeping and curating important map collections. The Archives are digitizing and documenting the maps of important collections, like the Mt. Athos Map Library, the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive, the Municipality of Thessaloniki urban map collection, the Hellenic Ministry of Development / Directorate of Mines in North Greece map collections and others.
