History

The State Archives in Leipzig were established in 1954 as a branch of the Landeshauptarchiv Dresden and was originally named Landesarchiv Leipzig. In 1965, with their establishment as a separative institution, the Archives were renamed Staatsarchiv Leipzig. In 1995 the Zentralstelle für Genealogie was intergrated in the Staatsarchiv Leipzig. On 1 January 2005 the Staatsarchiv Leipzig was joined with the State Archives of Chemnitz, Dresden and Freiberg, altogether considered the Sächsisches Staatsarchiv.

Archival and Other Holdings

Staatsarchiv Leipzig is responsible for the records of courts, government agencies and public bodies in the administrative district of Leipzig. The Archives are divided into three departments: central services, archival materials of NW-Sachsen and Deutsche Zentralstelle für Genealogie/Sonderbestände. The collections overview indicates the presence of World War II-related archival material, including administrative documents of the Third Reich.
