History

The Lower Austrian State Archives hold former and present administrative and court records (documents, manuscripts and documents from the Middle Ages to the present day), and further archives of former landlords, court archives, documents of important figures, various collections, etc. On 18 November 1997 the new national archive in St. Pölten was created. The two departments and the NÖInstitut für Landeskunde were for the first time in the same location. The branch in Bad Pirawarth also remains.

Archival and Other Holdings

The holdings of the Lower Austrian State Archives are grouped into groups of stocks: these include about the archive of the estates, the archives of the state administration and state administration in Lower Austria, the archives of the courts and tax authorities, as well as numerous archives of secular and ecclesiastical lordships, and the Chamber of Agriculture and Bezirksbauernkammer. Among others contains restitution- and/or compensation-related materials: 1. Opferfürsorge-Akten (deceased applicants); 2. "Vermögensentzugs- und Rückstellungsakten;" closed files; restriction: access only with prior approval, data needs to be anonymised.
