  1. Suitcase used by a Jewish family for their flight from Germany

    Suitcase carried by Ruth Arnoldi when her family fled Nazi Germany in October 1941 for Santo Domingo. They had to have the suitcase made to the order per government regulations. A German official supervised the packing of the suitcase, which was then sealed.

    The Eugen and Helene Cohn papers include correspondence and certificates documenting the couple’s health and status as refugees and internees in France following their return to Europe aboard the MS St. Louis, their efforts to gather the necessary documentation to emigrate to Cuba via Portugal, and their departure for Cuba aboard the SS Nyassa.

    Reel 4 Michael O'Brien, an Irish rebel leader from Dublin, is hanged in 1903 by the British for subversion and high treason. His eighteen-year-old son, also named Michael O'Brien, is sent to St. Edwards College -- a boarding school specifically aimed at making Irish children 'think English' by tight surveillance and ideological education. There, a fellow student collects information for his uncle at the British Secret Service.     The collection consists of scrip, documents, and photographs relating to the experiences of Gerhard Maschkowski before the Holocaust in Elbing, Germany, and during the Holocaust in Neuendorf and Auschwitz concentration camps, and of documents, correspondence, and photographic postcards relating to the experiences of Ursula Naumann (later Maschkowski) and her family during the Holocaust in Theresienstadt, and to both Gerhard and Ursula after the war in Deggendorf displaced persons camp, where they met, and in the United States where they later settled.

    The footage begins near the opening of Session 82 with Servatius questioning Eichmann on the stand. Servatius presents communications between Himmler and Kaltenbrunner about the deporation of 5,000 elderly Jews from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz. There is some confusion regarding the date of the document. Servatius presents another document, which describes a change in the Jewish leadership of Theresienstadt from one person, a Dr. Edelstein, to a triumvirate consisting of Eppstein, Löwenherz and Edelstein.
